Dear Milford Industries

We have had a Milford cargo barrier in our Subaru Forester for some time.  It was fitted by 'Child Restraints Fitted' in North Melbourne.  We have always found it handy as it allowed us to fully utilise the back of the Forester without endangering ourselves.

In November this year we were travelling home from an interstate holiday.  Myself and my husband were in the front of the car and our two children, aged 2 years and 4 years were in the back.  The back of the car was fully laden and we also had a luggage pod.  The cargo barrier allowed us to load the back and keep loose objects out of the passenger area. The level of the luggage in the back was almost to the roof.

While travelling at about 70kmh, a speeding vehicle, estimated to be travelling at 80-90kmh slammed into the back of our car. The force caused us to start to skid, we were then hit again by the now out of control vehicle and our car rolled onto the passenger side.  The car slid along the road and came to a halt, still on its side, after the back clipped a light pole.

As you can see by the attached photographs the car was extensively damaged and has now been written off.  Amazingly our injuries were minor and consisted of bruises and neck/shoulder soreness, except for our two year old who sustained a blood nose, bruised mouth and swollen lip after being hit in the face, we believe, by her drink bottle.

The police and fire brigade who attended were surprised that there were so few injuries.  The ambulance transported us to hospital for observation but we were discharged after a few hours.

We believe that our cargo barrier prevented more serious injuries from occurring.  Without the cargo barrier we would have found ourselves fending off flying objects such as a stroller, bags, a telescope, assorted tools and walking boots.  Any of these would have caused serious if not fatal injuries especially to the children. 

The benefit of the cargo barrier was also proved by the injury to my daughter.  This injury was caused by a plastic drink bottle, I can not bear to think what a flying stroller may have done to her.  We also believe that the cargo barrier prevented, to some extent, our belongings from spilling out over the road, creating another hazard as well as a greater loss for us.

We have now purchased a Subaru Outback and of course will be installing another Milford Industries cargo barrier in it. Recommending them to our friends and family has also become one of our hobbies now!
